There seems to be a lot of talk this morning about a potential suspension for Paul George and Rasual Butler for leaving the bench during last night’s altercation. Video of the scuffle for those who haven’t seen it.

Here is the rule in question, one that’s been enforced on several occasions.

“During an altercation, all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined up to $50,000.”

Boris Diaw and Amar’e Stoudemire got hit with this in a 2007 playoff game. It ultimately led to the Suns losing the series.

But back to Paul George and Rasual Butler. Here’s the furthest they wandered onto the court.

So basically they made it to the three point line before they stopped. Now here’s a look at the Atlanta Hawks bench at the exact same moment.

What’s that 3, 4 guys on the court? All at the three-point line?

You see what I’m getting at here people? The rule is stupid and everyone knows it’s stupid. You’re not “leaving the bench” if you take one step on the court. So let’s chill out with the suspension BS. Adam Silver has proved to be somewhat intelligent in his short reign as commissioner. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here.
