Michael Jordan meme

It’s been 12 years since Michael Jordan last played in the NBA, and 17 years since he won his last NBA title. His brand, however, is stronger than ever.

In 2014 for example, he made $100 million from selling sneakers with the Air Jordan logo on them than in his 15-season NBA career, which amounts to $90.2 million. Obviously, the salaries in the NBA for players of all levels have skyrocketed, and most of Jordan’s money was made during his final two seasons with the Chicago Bulls, $30 million in 1996-1997 and $33 million in 1997-1998.  But Jordan makes more money than any other active NBA player does off the court, including a superstar and global icon like LeBron James.

Jordan is more than just a retired athlete. He’s a businessman, a rather successful one that, and also the owner of the Charlotte Hornets (formerly the Bobcats). However, when it comes to success with the basketball team he owns, things haven’t gone too smoothly, with just two playoff appearances since acquiring the team.

Jordan played in the NBA from 1984 to 2003 with two retirements. After winning the first three-peat in 1993 he left the game to pursue a baseball career. He returned after a season and a half away from the league. After completing the second three-peat with the Bulls in 1998, he retired again, for good this time. In 2001 he returned to play with the Washington Wizards for two seasons, averaging over 20 points per game despite heading into the fifth decade of his life.
