For a very short time, Ronda Rousey managed to establish herself as the face of the UFC and as one of the most dominant athletes on the planet. But that was just clever media hype. She got knocked out by Holly Holm with a kick to the head, and the memes, gloating in her downfall, couldn’t stop coming.
One of the happiest people on the planet right now is Floyd Mayweather. A great boxer, but a terrible human being. It doesn’t matter. Rousey has never hidden her lack of affection for him. Mayweather, undefeated in boxing (maybe retired for good now), has to be delirious now that Rousey got beaten as well.
There’s not much to analyze from such a short fight. Holm came in without the fanfare and star power of Rousey, but it was her kind of fight, and even before the kick that finished things off, it was her all the way towards a win.
If the UFC was trying to sell the notion that anything can happen in their fights, this was probably the best thing that could have happened. But from a standpoint of promoting Rousey, the face of the women in this sport? Probably not the best thing that could have happened.
