The biggest shock of the Copa America Centenario so far occurred in the final matchday of Group B, as Brazil lost to Peru and were knocked out of the tournament, while Ecuador got the job done by beating Haiti, and joining Peru in the quarter final.
Peru, finishing on top of the group, will now face Colombia in the quarterfinals. Ecuador will play against the United States.
Ecuador 4 Haiti 0: Haiti finish the tournament with one goal scored and 11 to pick out of their own net. They didn’t provide any resistance to an Ecuadorian side that’s been quite fun to watch. Enner Valencia opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Jaime Ayovi made it 2-0 after 20, making it quite clear that Ecuador were going through on goal difference. Christian Noboa and Antonio Valencia scored in the second half, and later Ecuador found out they’re making it into the final 8 at the expense of Brazil, possibly making it a bit sweeter.
Brazil 0 Peru 1: Yes, Raul Ruidiaz’ goal shouldn’t have been allowed due to his use of his hand. However, Brazil are punished for playing for the draw, and for hiring Dunga, and ultra-conservative coach who has already failed with the national side before. Maybe succeeding in the Olympics is more important to Brazil, but to see them look this helpless without Neymar suggests once again on the huge crisis Brazilian football is going through, unable to churn out talent in the way it has in the past, or simply incapable of choosing the right coaches to pick the right players.
