While the Minnesota Vikings enjoy their bye week, both the New England Patriots on their Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski rampage tour, and the Dallas Cowboys on their Dak Prescott-Ezekiel Elliott rookie run, set themselves apart from the rest of the NFL. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers and worse, injured Ben Roethlisberger which could make a huge difference in how this season develops.
Denver Broncos (4-2) 13 San Diego Chargers (2-4) 21: Fantastic defense forced the Broncos to turn the ball over twice, and one early touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Hunter Henry helped set the stage for the Chargers coming back to life this season, while the Broncos need to ask questions about where they’re going with Trevor Siemian.
San Francisco 49ers (1-5) 16 Buffalo Bills (4-2) 45: Colin Kaepernick grabbed the headlines and even threw a touchdown pass, but he completed only 13-of-29 throws while running for 66 yards. His defense was non-existent, allowing Tyrod Taylor two touchdown throws and LeSean McCoy to run for three, as the Bills finished with 312 rushing yards.
Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) 20 Washington Redskins (4-2) 27: Second straight loss for the Eagles, fourth straight win for the Redskins. Carson Wentz was sacked five times, Kirk Cousins threw a couple of touchdown passes (and an interception) while Matt Jones ran for 135 yards and a touchdown. The Redskins blew a 14-0 lead, but broke away after the game was tied, with their defense holding off Philly.
Cleveland Browns (0-6) 26 Tennessee Titans (3-3) 28: Cody Kessler wasn’t bad (two touchdowns, 336 yards), but the Browns got just 40 yards on the ground, and constantly tried coming back from behind, falling a bit short. Marcus Mariota threw 3 touchdown passes (and an interception) while DeMarco Murray ran for a touchdown as well. Terrelle Pryor continues to be fantastic with two touchdown passes.
Baltimore Ravens (3-3) 23 New York Giants (3-3) 27: The Giants stop the losing, the Ravens lose their third in a row, once again forced to throw the ball more than 40 times. Joe Flacco did look better, and Terrance West ran for two touchdowns, but the Ravens couldn’t convert in the red zone, while Eli Manning looked a lot better (despite throwing two interceptions). Odell Beckham had a huge day with two touchdown catches and 222 receiving yards, including the 66-yard play that won the game with 1:24 to go.
Carolina Panthers (1-5) 38 New Orleans Saints (2-3) 41: The Saints started 21-0 and even had a 14-point lead going into the fourth, but the Panthers tied the game with three rushing touchdowns, two by Jonathan Stewart and one by Cam Newton. But the Saints had enough time for one final play, resulting in a 52-yard field goal by Wil Lutz to win the game with 11 seconds to go.
Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) 17 Chicago Bears (1-5) 16: The Bears inability to maintain a lead (13-0 at one point) or get in the end zone doomed them again, outscored 17-3 in the final quarter, losing on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Blake Bortles to Arrelious Benn.
Los Angeles Rams (3-3) 28 Detroit Lions (3-3) 31: A nice duel between Case Keenum and Matthew Stafford ended in the Lions favor, not just statistically, but with Golden Tate tying the game with 6:02 to go, and the Lions winning it on a Matt Elam field goal from 34 yards, and then a Rafael Bush interception to seal the win.
Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) 15 Miami Dolphins (2-4) 30: The Dolphins beat up Ben Roethlisberger who might be out for a long time (meniscus tear). Ryan Tannehill didn’t do anything special, so it was up to Jay Ajayi with 204 rushing yards and two touchdowns to pick up the slack in one of the more surprising wins this season.
Cincinnati Bengals (2-4) 17 New England Patriots (5-1) 35: The window the Bengals had open for about five years might be closing, unable to withstand Tom Brady (376 yards, 3 touchdown passes) and Rob Gronkowski, who ran over the Bengals secondary in a heated game between the best tight end in the NFL and the defense unable to stop him.
Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) 26 Oakland Raiders (4-2) 10: Derek Carr has struggled time and time again vs the Chiefs. The Chiefs scored 3 rushing touchdowns, including Spencer Ware running for 131 yards and a TD, while the Raiders struggled doing anything that didn’t involve getting the ball to Amari Cooper, playing without #1 running back Latavius Murray.
Atlanta Falcons (4-2) 24 Seattle Seahawks (5-1) 26: The Falcons scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to take over the game, opening a 24-17 lead. But the offense couldn’t do anything in the final quarter, which led to Steven Hauschka hitting a 44-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the game to win it, although a Richard Sherman pass interference that wasn’t called (not very surprising) helped them win the game.
Dallas Cowboys (5-1) 30 Green Bay Packers (3-2) 16: Besides Eddie Lacy defying gravity with his hurdling, this was more of the same: Aaron Rodgers playing poorly for long stretches, while Dak Prescott, despite his first career interception, doing excellent work with 247 passing yards and three touchdown throws. Meanwhile, Ezekiel Elliott ran for 157 yards, his fourth consecutive game of over 130 yards.
Indianapolis Colts (2-4) 23 Houston Texans (4-2) 26: After being criticized for underperforming, Brock Osweiler threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to bring his team from behind and send it into overtime, where the Texans won it off a Nick Novak 33-yard field goal.
