NHL Season Opening Scores & Standings

The 2016-2017 NHL season started with one name on everyone’s lips: Auston Matthews, scoring four goals on his debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Too bad it ended in a loss to the Ottawa Senators, while the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks also won on opening night.

Toronto Maple Leafs 4  Ottawa Senators 5: The Maple Leafs started a new era with a loss, but their number one overall draft pick, 18-year old Auston Matthews, is the person everyone is talking about. He scored four goals on his NHL debut, which was almost enough, but Kyle Turris scored in overtime to give the Senators a season-opening win.

St. Louis Blues 5  Chicago Blackhawks 2: Richard Panik opened the scoring in favor of Chicago, and the Blackhawks led again in the second period through Ryan Hartman. However, the third period was all Blues, as Paul Stastny gave them the lead with a power play goal, and Vladimir Tarasenko added his second of the night to ensure the win.

Calgary Flames 4  Edmonton Oilers 7: Four goals in the first period, four goals in the second period. Goals everywhere, but most of them in Brian Elliott’s net. Connor McDavid stood out for the Oilers, scoring two goals and adding an assist.

Los Angeles Kings 1  San Jose Sharks 2: Tyler Toffoli gave the Kings the lead in the first period, but the Sharks quickly equalized through Logan Couture, and Couture was part of the setup in the third period for the winner by Brent Burns.
