For at least a few days, the New York Knicks are the worst team in the NBA, thanks to the Philadelphia 76ers winning two consecutive games, the second of them being against the Miami Heat.
Even more incredible? In this 91-87 win, the 76ers came back from being 23 points behind in the third quarter. Their young, long-armed defense held the Heat to just nine points in the fourth quarter. That defense forced 20 turnovers and also blocked 11 shots. The Sixers, despite their awful 4-23 record, have one of the best defenses in the NBA. Their problem is looking like a team of amateurs on offense for most of the time.
But this win means more than just some happy days for all those sad Philadelphia sports fans (Eagles out of the playoffs, Flyers doing terribly, Phillies did and will do awfully). It also means the New York Knicks at 5-25 are for now the worst in the NBA.
Why? Percentage wise, they’re better off than the Sixers. However, they are 17.5 games behind the Raptors while the 76ers, playing three less games, are “only” 17 games behind Toronto. While the 76ers were planning on tanking and doing as badly as possible, the Knicks had other plans in mind.
Carmelo Anthony said once or twice that he made his choice to re-sign with the New York Knicks about winning. Obviously, it was about money, as everyone knows and knew back then. Maybe Phil Jackson has this grandiose and impressive rebuilding plan that’s already in its stride.
However, it shouldn’t have been this awful during the “in-between” years. Anthony isn’t even playing anymore (injury or “injury”) and there are some suggesting it’s better for the Knicks to shut him down. There have been a lot of low moments for this franchise over the last 12 or 13 years. This season just might be the worst of them.
