Playing for the first time since tearing his ACL last season, the Arizona Cardinals couldn’t have asked for more from Carson Palmer.
The 35-year old who has seen his share of knee ligaments torn, repaired and rehabbed since entering the league in 2003, looked sharp with a 4-for-4 and 77 yards in his one drive on the field, his first game since tearing an ACL last Nov. 9. He led an 80-yard drive that ended with a touchdown by Andre Ellington, before sitting down and making way for three other quarterbacks.
One of the questions regarding the Cardinals is whether or not they over reached last season. Despite losing Palmer for about half the season with two injuries, they made their way into the playoffs behind Drew Stanton, Ryan Lindley (no longer with the team) and even a bit of Logan Thomas, who threw an interception in his preseason debut.
With a healthy Palmer, is this a playoff team again? Maybe more than that? The Palmer health issue is a big one, but maybe it’s less about how well he plays but simply him staying on the field, while the defense takes care of the rest.
Speaking of defense, cornerback Tyrann Mathieu picked off an Alex Smith pass to set up a field goal for the Cardinals, before the backups took over the field, helping the Kansas City Chiefs come away with a 31-19 win after falling 0-10 behind to start the game.
