Considering the options in the market and on the team, making Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback of the Houston Texans was probably the right move for them.
Hoyer, recently named as the designated starter for the Texans, played well, completing 7-of-11 for 82 yards and leading the Texans to two scoring drives, one of them ending in a touchdown by Alfred Blue. Every one of the quarterbacks for the Texans did well, as disappointed backup Ryan Mallett threw a touchdown pass to Jaelen Strong while Tom Savage found Chandler Worthy for another, as the Texans won the game 27-13 against the New Orleans Saints.
Hoyer actually had a good chance of getting a touchdown throw himself, but a pass interference call on Keenan Lewis, preventing DeAndre Hopkins from pulling a pass in the end zone for the six points, led to the Texans eventually getting there through the ground game and Blue.
The Texans have a long list of running backs trying to make their way up the depth chart in hope of getting the touches Arian Foster won’t be having. Jonathan Grimes was the only one of them averaging decent numbers per carry, as Kenny Hilliard, Chris Polk and Blue all didn’t really light it up when they got to touch the ball.
The Texans didn’t play Vince Wilfork or J.J. Watt, and the two teams are going to meet in the regular season, which means it’s partially a regular precaution against injuries but also not showing everything they have planned to the opposition.
