Things have gone quite weirdly for Matt Flynn over the last few years. He has now been released by the New England Patriots, but it turns out they plan to bring him back the moment he heals up from his hamstring injury.
Why not just keep him on the roster? The Patriots need a healthy backup quarterback to throw passes in practice and they’re likely to sign Ryan Lindley for the job. But they’re still interested in Flynn, who has been in the league since 2008, but has only 7 starts to his name.
Flynn seemed to be on the right path for a while. Playing for the Packers, he sat behind Aaron Rodgers, waiting for his chance. His week 17 appearance for the Packers in the 2011 season earned him a big contract with the Seattle Seahawks, signing him for three years on a deal worth $20.5 million.
But instead of starting for them in 2012, he lost the battle to Russell Wilson, a third-round pick that year, and once again found himself on the bench. After one season he was traded to the Oakland Raiders. Flynn was supposed to come out of training camp as the starter, but lost that battle to Terrelle Pryor. He was soon released, signed and released by the Bills and found himself back home in Green Bay, where he started four times because of Rodgers injury in 2013. Last season he sat on the bench almost all the time, not getting a single start.
He was signed by the Patriots on June 11. There are no illusions for Flynn about his status in New England. His a third-string quarterback, behind Tom Brady (suspended right now) and Jimmy Garoppolo. But even if the Patriots are interested in him, the way things have gone for Flynn over the last three years, it won’t be surprising to see him lose that backup role to Lindley.
