The final day of the swimming world championships was packed with events, and saw one American gold medal with the 4×100 men’s medley relay, enough to put them on top of the medal table in both overall and golds. Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy won the men’s 1500 meters freestyle; Camille Lacourt of France took the men’s 50 meters backstroke; Daiya Seto of Japan won the men’s 400 meters individual medley; Bronte Campbell of Australia won the women’s 50 meters freestyle; Jennie Johansson of Sweden won the women’s 50 meters breaststroke; Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won the women’s 400 meters individual medley and China won the final race of the championship, the women’s 4×100 medley relay.
Men’s 1500 meters freestyle – Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy won in the absence of Sun Yang, getting his first gold medal in the world’s with a 14:39.67. Connor Jaeger of the United States finished second with a 14:41.20 while Ryan Cochrane of Canada took bronze with 14:51.08. Paltrinieri set a new European record. Allegedly, Yang missed the swim because of altercation with a female swimmer from Brazil in the warm up pool.
Men’s 50 meters backstroke – Camille Lacourt manages to break the Mitch Larkin domination, winning his only gold of the championship with a 24.23, beating Matt Grevers of the United States who swam a 24.61 and Ben Treffers of Australia, picking up bronze with 24.69, while Larkin took fourth.
Men’s 400 meters individual medley – Japan’s Daiya Seto defended his title from Barcelona two years ago, swimming a 4:08.50, leaving silver for Dávid Verrasztó of Hungary with 4:09.90 and Chase Kalisz of the United States taking bronze with a 4:10.05.
Men’s 4×100 meters medley relay – The United States beat out Australia (silver) and France (bronze) in a wonderful race. The Americans, with the foursome of Ryan Murphy, Kevin Cordes, Tom Shields and Nathan Adrian, swam a 3:29.93, beating the Aussies 3:30.08 (Cameron McEvoy swam a 46.60 on the final leg) and France’s 3:30.50.
Women’s 50 meters freestyle – Bronte Campbell of Australia completed the 50-100 double, swimming a 24.12, finished ahead of Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands with a 24.22 and Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, taking bronze after swimming a 24.31.
Women’s 50 meters breaststroke – Jennie Johansson became the second Swedish gold medalist of the championship, swimming a 30.05 to finish ahead of Jamaican Alia Atkinson, taking silver after 30.11. Bronze went to Yulia Yefimova of Russia, swimming a 30.13.
Women’s 400 meters individual medley – Katinka Hosszu of Hungary completes the individual medley double with 4:30.39, beating Maya DiRado of the United States taking silver after a 4:31.71 and bronze medalist Emily Overholt of Canada, taking a 4:32.52.
Women’s 4×100 meters medley relay – In a race with two teams disqualified after the finish, China takes gold with a foursome of Fu Yuanhui, Shi Jinglin, Lu Ying and Shen Duo. Sweden set a new European record (3:55.24) to take silver while Australia with 3:55.56 finished third to take bronze. The United States finished outside the medals (fourth) in a disappointing finish to the championship.
