Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Basketball

The list of undefeated teams in the 2015-2016 College Basketball Season remains the same: South Carolina (beating Vanderbilt) and SMU, who still haven’t played this weekend. As for ranked teams upsets? Virginia, Arizona, Iowa State and Dayton are all finding conference play to be quite difficult.

The Gamecocks struggled against Vanderbilt, the team many thought would be the number two teams in the SEC behind Kentucky, but still pulled through on a 69-65 win. Sindarius Thornwell scored 19 points and was helped by Mindaugas Kacinas adding 15. The rest was mostly defense, holding Vanderbilt to 32.8% from the field including just 20% on 24 3-point attempts.

As for ranked teams going down, the highest ranked team to lose was #4 Virginia, losing two consecutive ACC road games. This time it was in Atlanta to Georgia Tech (68-64) which means they’re down to 1-2 in the ACC. Quinton Stephens couldn’t stop hitting 3’s to score 16 points and got help from Adam Smith (16 as well) and Nick Jacobs, as Virginia got nothing from their bench and overall nothing much besides Malcolm Brogdon.

Arizona, #7 before the game, are also 1-2 in conference play, losing to the surging USC in a four-overtime game. They dropped their previous game against UCLA by three points, this time it was 103-101. Elijah Stewart shined for the Trojans with 27 points, with five players finishing in double figures. Arizona turned the ball over 19 times, and were led by Allonzo Trier scoring 25 points.

For the second straight season Iowa State, now 1-2 in the Big 12, lose at home to Baylor, this time 94-89. Johnathan Motley scored 27 points off the bench while Taurean Prince added 18 and Lester Medford scored 16. Baylor simply erupted with 60 second half points, and the change in defense helped them get some stops and finally slow down Georges Niang, scoring 22 points.

Dayton, #25, lost to La Salle, which is their first A-10 loss this season. The 12-3 Flyers finally made it into the top 25, but won’t be back in for a while after this loss. As for ranked teams that had an easier time, number one Kansas rolled over Texas Tech, number two Oklahoma beat Kansas State 86-76 with 31 points from Buddy Hield, Maryland edged Wisconsin 63-60 on a game winning 3-pointer and number 6 North Carolina improved to 15-2 and 4-0 in the ACC with a 84-73 win in Syracuse, who are still winless in conference play.
