The last divisional series is over, with the New York Mets advancing to the NLCS at the expense of the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning game 5 on the road 3-2 with Jacob deGrom doing the job on the pitching mound and Daniel Murphy delivering the goods at the plate.

New York Mets beat Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2, Win Series 3-2

In a pitchers duel, it was the younger Jacob deGrom that came out with his hand on top against Zack Greinke. It wasn’t a bad pitching day for Greinke (6.2 innings, six hits, nine strikeouts, three runs), but he gave up one more score than deGrom, who also gave up six hits, struck out seven and played for six innings. The Dodgers offense, paid ridiculously more than the Mets hitters who struggled this season until the arrival of Yoenis Cespedes, couldn’t make it happen.

Besides deGrom and maybe more than him, there’s Daniel Murphy. While both David Wright and Cespedes went 0-for-4 against Greinke and those that followed, Murphy finished with 3-for-4 and two of the most important RBIs in the game. His double to deep center in the beginning of the game put the Mets on the scoreboard first, and his home run in the sixth inning off of Greinke, his third of the postseason, gave the Mets the lead once more, one they wouldn’t relinquish.

Except for the first inning, in which Justin Turner and Andre Ethier hit back to back RBIs and gave the Dodgers a short-lived lead. The disappointing postseason performances from the recent past came to life again as the Mets pitching, with Noah Syndergaard and finally Jeurys Familia delivering a solid relief effort, not allowing a single hit in the final three innings, leading to the celebrations after a road game, and the Dodgers thinking hard about how $273 million and the biggest salary cap in baseball couldn’t win them a title once more.
