Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes, claiming the 2016 Champions League final, the club’s 11th time as winners of the competition, more than any other club in Europe.
Real Madrid scored first, in the 15th minute, as an offside Sergio Ramos tapped in a free kick, beating Jan Oblak from close range. Atletico Madrid were the better team after Real’s opening goal, but Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty kick by sending the ball powerfully into the crossbar, bouncing away after the initial hit.
Remaining the dominant side, substitute Yannick Carrasco connected with a cross in the 79th minute to give the Colchoneros a deserved equalizer, which sent the match into overtime. The first half of extra time belonged to Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid were the more dangerous side from the 105th minute onward. The game still made it to penalty kicks.
Both sides scored their first three kicks, but while Sergio Ramos nailed Real’s 4th kick. Juanfran had a bad run up to his attempt, sending it to the post. Cristiano Ronaldo, having a poor evening, also struggling with an injury, scored the deciding penalty, mirroring his celebration from two years ago, when he scored a penalty kick to cap off a Real Madrid win in the final over the same rival, while he had a similarly ineffective performance.
