The second day of the Copa America Centenario gave us three matches and only one goal, a disappointing anticlimax to the terrific performance by Colombia against the hosts in the tournament opener. Brazil looked clueless in front of goal against Ecuador, Costa Rica and Paraguay mostly fouled each other and Peru provided the only goal of the day in their win against Haiti.
Costa Rica 0 Paraguay 0: A match that was mostly about the teams looking for excuses to fight each other. Costa Rica’s Bryan Ruiz had a good chance in the 17th minute, but the rest was borderline violence. Two fouls during the match nearly sent the teams into massive brawls. Eventually, Kendall Waston of Costa Rica was sent off in injury time, for a challenge from behind on Nelson Valdez, which means he’ll miss their match against the United States.
Haiti 0 Peru 1: Peru’s Paolo Guerrero became the national side’s all-time leading scorer with his 61st minute goal, connecting with a cross from Edison Flores to score his 27th international goal. Guerrero was the most dangerous man throughout the match, but it wasn’t until the final 10 minutes of the first half that he was finally able to create some danger next to Haiti, who defended well during the first half hour, and were even the more dangerous side during the first half.
Brazil 0 Ecuador 0: The talents of Philippe Coutinho and Willian weren’t enough while Brazil, more focused on the upcoming Olympic tournament, kept Neymar out of the match. For all of their dominance and possession, the problems upfront for Brazil continue, with Jonas, later replaced by Gabriel, not providing any real threat. Ecuador also had a goal wrongfully disallowed, as Miller Bolanos was able to control the ball so it did not cross the byline before scoring, but the officials ruled it had gone out.
